Lessons Learned from Pittsburgh

Sam and I recently visited Pittsburgh, PA — Home of the Steelers and our Chairman’s least favorite team in the NFL. We visited the Veterans Leadership Program and Annette Romain, Director of Programs and Development. Although we entered our pilot program to serve Dallas' veterans and community members, continued education is always needed.

Talk about in the trenches! VLP performed over 4,800 incidences of service to veterans, service members, and their family members in 2008, an increase of nearly 220% from 2007. They were instrumental in the recent establishment of a veteran’s court, a local court giving veterans a second chance, helped organize the first Stand Down and many other success stories.

VLP does intensive case management through their case workers, who handle all the housing and employment programs. Their case workers carry a load of 15-25 clients at all times.

VLP never says no to a veteran. They serve anyone who ever put on a uniform or their families. If they don’t have the right solution in-house, they will connect you to the appropriate one. Thank you, Annette and the Veterans Leadership Program team, for your insight, advice and time!
